Not much is known about the origins of Texas hold ‘em poker, but it thought that the game originated in Robstown, Texas in the early 1900’s and found its way to Las Vegas in 1967 through a group of Texan card players.  Texas hold ‘em is a very popular variant of poker and its popularity increased during the 2000’s because of exposure on TV, Internet and the many books written on the subject. It has become more popular than seven card stud and is the preferred game played at the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour.

How to Play Texas Hold ‘em

The game starts with each player receiving two cards face down from the dealer and these are known as hole cards.  A round of betting follows where players can either check, bet or fold.  This part of the game is known as pre-flop and everything will depend on the starting hand.  Once the betting is finished three face up cards are dealt in the middle of the table and this is known as the flop.

A round of betting follows and then a fourth card is dealt, this is a shared card and is known as the turn.  Another round of betting follows and the final card, also a shared card is dealt and is known as the river.  And then another round of betting, this is the final round.

The best hand will be comprised of hole cards and the five cards dealt.  An example is if a player has two nine’s and the shared cards are a nine, nine, ace, five and two then players will have four of a kind, but if the shared cards are jack, queen, king, seven and two then a player will have two nine’s.  The best hand could also come from the five shared cards only, for example if the shared cards are four ten’s and a player has two nine’s the hole cards would not play because four of a kind, which is a higher value is showing.

A round of Texas hold ‘em can end in one of two ways.  One way is if a player turns over the hole card and the best hand wins.  This is known as a showdown.  The other way is if a player bets a large amount making all the other players fold.  Most of the games in Texas hold ‘em end like this.
